The Retail Finance Distribution (ReFinD) initiative supports research that improves the delivery and distribution of digital financial services (DFS) in low- and middle-income countries. Grants are awarded through competitive calls for proposals to researchers, institutions, and commercial actors working in this space.

Grant Categories

ReFinD offers sub-grants in five categories:

Each category is designed to support a different stage of research, from concept development to large-scale field evaluations.

Applications are open to:

  • Academic and research institutions
  • Policy think tanks and development agencies
  • Commercial organizations with a research focus
  • Multidisciplinary and cross-country teams

Collaborative proposals, especially those bridging the gap between research and practice, are encouraged.

Funded projects typically explore themes such as:

  • Agent network design and DFS delivery models
  • Customer experience and service adoption
  • Infrastructure and cost efficiency
  • Policy and regulatory impacts
  • Financial inclusion for underserved groups

Applicants are encouraged to review our Framework Paper to align with priority research areas.

Applicants are typically asked to submit:

  • A detailed proposal
  • CVs of key researchers
  • Timeline and budget
  • Statement of alignment with ReFinD goals

Specific requirements are shared during open calls.

Grant applications are accepted during open Calls for Proposals (RFPs), which are announced on our website and mailing list. Information sessions are often held to assist applicants.
